No, we are not currently in-network with any insurance plans. However, some insurance plans provide out-of-network reimbursement for your visits. See below for tips on how to talk to your insurance company to check if you have out-of-network benefits.
-
Access to Customized Treatment Options: Out-of-network psychiatrists may be able to offer a wider range of treatment options beyond what is typically covered by insurance. Insurance plans can sometimes deny coverage for some mental health treatments, even when you and your doctor have determined that the treatment is beneficial.
Reduced Wait Times and More Flexible Scheduling: in-network psychiatrists can sometimes have long wait times for appointments. Opting for an out-of-network psychiatrist may provide faster access to care, ensuring you receive timely treatment and more flexible scheduling options.
More Time Dedicated to Your Care: Out-of-network psychiatrists can often provide longer and more frequent sessions than what insurance plans may cover, allowing more time for in-depth discussions and comprehensive treatment. They minimize time spent on insurance-related tasks and instead focus on delivering thoughtful and personalized care. This also means your psychiatrist can be more accessible and responsive to any questions or concerns that may arise during your treatment.
Enhanced Privacy and Confidentiality: By choosing an out-of-network psychiatrist, you may have added privacy and confidentiality since your medical information is not directly shared with insurance companies or third-party payers.

Some people are experiencing insomnia, panic attacks, or social anxiety. While some are seeking help managing stress, burnout, life transitions, relationships issues, or mental health struggles related to their physical health. No, just because you are seeing a psychiatrist does not mean you have to take a medication. We discuss treatment plans with our patients that can include therapy (with Dr. Jackson or with other local therapists who we collaborate with, depending on your therapy needs), healthy lifestyle changes, natural methods to help improve your symptoms, testing for some medical conditions that may contribute to your psychiatric health by ordering labs or working with your primary care doctor, and/or discussion of the different medication options. Yes, holistic care is a core value at MindfulMD Psychiatry. We believe that true mental wellness is best supported by looking at the whole person—not just symptoms in isolation. This means considering the complex interaction between your mind, body, environment, and life circumstances when crafting your treatment plan.
Our approach blends evidence-based psychiatric care with thoughtful, integrative interventions to support your well-being on multiple levels.
Dr. Jackson works collaboratively with each patient to develop a personalized treatment plan tailored to your specific goals, preferences, and needs. This may include a thoughtful combination of:
Medication management – including initiating new medications that actually address your symptoms, deprescribing medications that are no longer serving you, and safely helping you come off psychiatric medications when you are ready. For many people, psychiatric medications can be very helpful, and we include them as an option—but not the only option—in your treatment plan. Our goal is always to find the lowest effective dose that optimizes benefit of the medication and minimizes the medication’s side effects. There are many providers out there who do not focus on this method, and many times this can lead to patients who are on medication doses that may lead to feeling like a zombie, feeling sedated, or simply no longer feeling like themselves. At MindfulMD, we want our patients to be able to thrive as themselves, without the burden of overmedication. Let’s be clear - not all of our patients are on medications, you don’t not have to be on medications to be a patient here. Many patients have specifically came to see us to help them come off of their medications safely with the guidance of an expert physician, or for assistance with finding medications that ACTUALLY WORK instead of just giving them endless side effects.
Psychotherapy – either provided directly by Dr. Jackson, or in collaboration with your current therapist or if you do not have a therapist, we can help match you with a skilled therapist near you who is specialized in the areas you need.
Lifestyle and behavioral changes – such as sleep optimization, stress reduction techniques, and habit change strategies.
Nutritional guidance – such as how nutrition, supplements, and overall nutritional health may impact your mood, energy, and cognitive function. This may include evaluating for vitamin and nutrient deficiencies, thyroid and liver function, and when indicated, genetic testing to provide more information regarding metabolism of medications. We also collaborate closely with expert nutritionists and immunology specialists to provide comprehensive support in optimizing your physical and mental health.
Mind-body techniques – including breathing exercises, mindfulness, and other somatic techniques to help regulate your nervous system.
Lab testing – such as speciality lab testing to investigate underlying biological contributors to mental and physical health concerns. This can also include gene testing.
Close coordination with your care team – with your consent, Dr. Jackson can collaborate with your other healthcare providers or therapists to ensure a well-integrated treatment approach. You deserve care that involves your whole team!
Our mission is to support your mental health in a way that is collaborative, compassionate, and individualized—drawing from both conventional and holistic tools to help you thrive.

This is a very common question that we receive. Psychiatrists and psychologists are both professionals who specialize in the field of mental health. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor (MD or DO) who has completed medical school and then additional four years of psychiatry residency training. Psychiatrists can diagnose mental health conditions, prescribe medication, and some psychiatrists provide therapy. A psychologist, on the other hand, has a doctoral degree in psychology (PhD or PsyD) and specializes in therapy, counseling, and psychological testing but cannot prescribe medication in most states.
Psychiatrists and psychologists often collaborate to support patients' mental health. For example, a psychiatrist may manage a patient’s medications, then refer the patient to a psychologist for specialized therapy and support.
-
At MindfulMD Psychiatry, we prioritize transparency and informed decision-making in your mental health journey. This is also a question that we are asked frequently by patients. Both psychiatrists and mid-level practitioners play important roles in delivering mental health care. Mid-level providers, such as psychiatric nurse practitioners and physician assistants, help increase access to treatment and many of them are capable of managing some mental health concerns.
Psychiatrists have extensive medical and psychiatric training that ensures they are equipped to provide the highest level of care. According to comparative training data: Psychiatrists undergo over 28 times more clinical training hours than PMHNPs (17,000 vs. 600). This additional training can be particularly helpful for patients looking to receive expert level care, with a provider who has:
specialized knowledge in diagnosing and treating complex diagnoses, treatment-resistant conditions, and expert level training of the interplay between your physical and mental health.
offering psychotherapy
a more comprehensive and medically-informed evaluation
looking for a provider with detailed training in diagnosing complex conditions as well as in managing unique the side effects of psychiatric medications, especially when considering the potential for uncommon or rare side effects with some psychiatric medications.
Just as there are excellent psychiatrists, excellent nurse practitioners, and excellent physicians assistants who provide compassionate, high-quality care, there are also providers in all three groups whose approach may not be the right fit—finding someone is who listens, respects your individual needs, and has the training needed to address your unique concerns and treatment goals is important.
Here's a breakdown of the key differences between these providers:
1. Educational Pathways & Clinical Training
Psychiatrists (MD or DO)
Psychiatrists are medical doctors who specialize in diagnosing and treating mental health conditions. Their training includes:
12+ years of formal education and training, including:
A 4-year undergraduate degree
4 years of medical school
4 years of psychiatric residency
Over 17,000+ hours of clinical training, with intensive instruction in:
Psychotherapy (e.g., psychodynamic therapy, CBT, DBT, ACT)
Psychopharmacology
Inpatient psychiatry and emergency care
Medical diagnostics and management of co-occurring medical conditions
Board Certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN)
Medical Expertise: Because they are fully licensed physicians, psychiatrists can diagnose complex medical and psychiatric conditions, prescribe medications, and integrate physical health issues into psychiatric care. Having an in-depth knowledge of how mental health and physical health are linked, including having thousands of hours of training dedicated to understanding how psychiatric medications can affect your physical health.
Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners (PMHNPs)
PMHNPs are advanced practice registered nurses with a psychiatric specialty. Their training generally includes:
A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
A Master's or Doctorate in Nursing (MSN or DNP) with a psychiatric focus
Approximately 500–750 hours of psychiatric clinical training
Physician Assistants (PAs)
PAs are medical professionals trained in general medicine who may specialize in psychiatry. Their path includes:
A bachelor’s degree
A 2–3 year graduate-level PA program
Approximately 2,000 hours of supervised clinical rotations in various medical fields, with some exposure to psychiatry
2. Approach to Treatment
Psychiatrists
Conduct comprehensive evaluations that include reviewing physical health, lab work, and possible medical contributors to psychiatric symptoms
Having specialized training in both medication management and psychotherapy
Often have the medical training that allows for providing integrative, holistic care
Are trained in advanced medication strategies, including deprescribing when appropriate and supporting patients through careful, individualized tapering plans
The depth and scope of a psychiatrist’s training includes working in the areas of internal medicine, neurology, pharmacology, complex psychiatric diagnostics, and advanced psychotherapy.
PMHNPs and PAs
Usually primarily focus on medication management
Often no, or limited, training in psychotherapy, depending on their program and experience

This information is usually provided in your insurance plan’s summary of benefits, often provided in your initial insurance information packet or on your insurance company website. I recommend calling your insurance company to verify if you have out-of-network benefits. The insurance customer service number is often on the back of your insurance card, and occasionally there is a separate phone number for mental health or behavioral health benefits. Here is link to a guide to checking your out-of-network benefits. You can also use websites like Reimbursify to help you with filing out-of-network claims and talking to your insurance.
If you are interested, MindfulMD will provide you with a Superbill (a receipt of the services you received) to give to your insurance company. You still must pay your entire session fee at the time of service unless we agree upon a different payment plan. Then depending on your specific insurance plan, your insurance company may mail you a check to reimburse a portion of the cost of your visit after you submit your Superbill.
